Lettering Philosophy & Policy (~OSH Band Handbook)

The Osseo Senior High School Band program is structured around and operated on the premise that all of our activities grow out of the classroom band experience. Students receive a grade for classroom participation so we reward activity outside of the classroom with lettering points. We encourage students to get involved in all aspects of the band program.

All band students may earn points each year of their involvement in the high school band program. All point totals will be subject to the Band Directors’ approval. All earned points will accumulate from year to year. Mr. Boulka is the director who will keep track of all students lettering status.

Points for a band letter can be earned by being an active member in the activities listed below. A student must be a member of the band program in order to participate in these events.
The lettering system’s main purpose is to:
  1. Reward students for involvement in all aspects of the program.
  2. Encourage students to be involved in more than one area of band activity.
  3. Make earning a letter in band much more meaningful.

All band students may earn points each year of their involvement in the high school band program. All point totals will be subject to the Band Directors’ approval. All earned points will accumulate from year to year. Mr. Boulka is the director who will keep track of all students lettering status. To receive the maximum points listed, students are expected to participate in ALL performances and at least 80% of all rehearsals. Failure to accomplish this will result in a reduction of points given.

Levels of Awards
15 points   = 1st Letter Award
35 points   = 2nd Letter Award
60 points   = 3rd Letter Award
90 points = 4th Letter Award (OUTSTANDING Musician!)

What is a letter/letter jacket and how/where do I get one?
Many students enter High School without knowing anything about letters, so here's for you all who want more info:

A Letter is something you get when you do really well in an activity in high school. If you receive a GPA of 3.8 or above, for example, you receive an academic letter. If you get onto a varsity team or have perfect attendance for a sport you are participating in, you will receive a letter (each sport may have different standards for earning letters). In the case of band, however, there are many different activities you can participate in, and for each one you participate in, you receive an assigned number of points (according the activity's difficulty and level of dedication required...see above chart for activity point values).

Once you have earned a letter, there will be a ceremony at some point during the school year where it will be given to you. The letter you receive is exactly that: a letter; it's an orange letter "O" (for Osseo). You may receive only one of these, and then you can earn bars for each additional letter you earn. Bars are gold pins in the shape of bars. You pin these to your letter. You may also receive pins for other reasons, depending on what you participate in.

A letter jacket is a black jacket, specially designed for our school, that you can buy at Dave's Sport Shop, but I warn you that they are fairly expensive and you can buy patches for the sleeves of the jacket too (additional $). Once you buy the jacket and patches, they will take it and keep it for a certain time so they can sew all the patches, including your letter, on the jacket for you (additional $).
